Fun With Words - Samples

Thank you for considering responding to a Fun With Words writers' prompt.  As it can be difficult to know exactly how to respond to a prompt, on this page we provide a sample for each prompt for you to use as a guide.
Please remember, the goal of the prompt is for YOU to have creative fun playing with words and putting something down on paper.  There is no correct response that we are looking for.  We want you to be imaginative and playful.  We expect to get very different responses from every writer.  In fact, the tremendous fun of responding to a prompt is discovering the incredible creative differences between writers.
Please submit your results so you can receive your Fun With Words Submission Certificate.  Check back here to read the responses we select for posting and follow your local paper as we will also send selected responses to them to publish with the next month's Notable Maryland Author article.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Mary lunched at the Moonbeams café. One day when the café was busy, she found herself sharing a table with a distinguished looking man named Tom. What started as a simple friendship soon blossomed into love, and they met every Tuesday and Thursday for lunch.  One Thursday, Tom seemed distracted.

“What’s the matter?" Mary asked softly. “You seem upset.”

“Not upset, just …” he stopped.  Pushing a sealed manila envelope across the table, he stood. “Look … if “I’m not here Tuesday, open this and follow the instructions.” He turned, rapidly walking out of the café.

Tony’s Search
A green coffee cup, half-filled with the chilled black liquid, sat to the right of the computer screen, untouched for several hours.  Tony Medoro scrolled through the latest classified intel summaries, searching for the info he needed, to no avail.  The name he needed appeared on no classified terrorist database or watch list.  A previous search with his non-secure Blackberry turned up nothing on the law enforcement register either, not NCIS, not anything. Who the hell was this guy?

A warning tone sounded, a wavering siren.  Tony picked up his M-16 and ratcheted a round into the chamber, safety off.
