An MWA Encouragement True Story
In 2012, I began looking for a writers’ group—a few friends I could get together with occasionally and talk about writing. If it worked for Hemingway and Sartre at the Deux Magots café in Paris, it should work for me. All I needed was a couple of writer friends and a café named “Two Worms.” When that effort failed, I turned to LinkedIn. Due to a few unfortunate keystrokes, I invited everyone I’d ever emailed and created an enormous group, almost none of whom were writers.
I’d almost given up when my husband read in the local paper that St. Mary’s County was organizing a chapter of the Maryland Writers’ Association. I’d never heard of the MWA, but that didn’t deter me; I did the paperwork, put a notice in the local paper, contacted everyone I thought might be interested, and the Charles County Chapter was launched in 2013.
There was still one snag. In retirement I wanted to be responsible for nothing and the boss of no one. After a couple of years as chapter president, I passed on the responsibility and I have finally found my group of writer friends. - Edna Troiano
